With the continued growth of mobile wireless subscribers and traffic and operators' drive to improve service and profitability, the need to cost-effectively boost network capacity is a constant. Even with the latest digital air interfaces and fully utilizing available network features, operators still need to resort to conventional solutions of adding spectrum or additional cell sites to the network to accommodate traffic and service growth. Increasing costs and delays in acquiring additional scarce spectrum and cell sites however, leave service providers with a significant challenge to profitably meet growth demands.
New air modulation technologies like W-CDMA, OFDM and others offer performance improvements and lower equipment costs, but deployment still requires finding or clearing dedicated spectrum and incremental site investments for initial deployment coverage.
In addition, traffic constraints are generally not network wide, but localized within a small percentage of the network. Operators are looking for solutions that can be tailored to those hotspot sites. By improving spectral capacity and performance where the problem lies at the congested sites, a carrier can extend the usefulness of their existing spectrum and network infrastructure before looking to purchase new spectrum.
